Quick Facts about Euro 2024 Host Country: Germany Dates: June 14 – July 14, 2024 Teams: 24 national teams Newcomers: Georgia is making their European Championship finals debut! Historic Venues and Matches Germany is no stranger to hosting major football events. This is the third time European Championship matches are played on German soil. It’s also the first major tournament since the 2006 FIFA World Cup where Germany is the solo host. What’s new this time? Leipzig, part of the former East Germany, is hosting matches for the first time in Euro history! Key Highlights So Far Youngest Player: Spain’s Lamine Yamal made history as the youngest player to feature at a UEFA European Championship at just 16 years and 338 days old. Fastest Goal: Albanian midfielder Nedim Bajrami scored the fastest goal in Euro history, netting against Italy in just 23 seconds. Oldest Player: Portugal’s Pepe became the oldest player to appear in a Euro final tournament match. Lamine Yamal Nedim Bajrami Pepe Host Selection Germany was selected to host Euro 2024 after a vote by the UEFA Executive Committee. The decision came down to Germany and Turkey, with Germany winning the bid. Germany’s choice of stadiums includes nine venues from the 2006 World Cup, plus Düsseldorf. The Road to Qualification Germany automatically qualified as the host. The remaining 23 spots were decided through qualifying matches and play-offs. Notable teams returning include defending champions Italy, runners-up England, and other big names like France and Portugal. Unfortunately, some teams like Sweden and Wales didn’t make it this year. Russia was banned from participating due to the invasion of Ukraine. Wales, who had impressive runs in the past two Euros, also didn’t make the cut this year.
